Tłumaczenie imion i nazwisk jest podstawowym zagadnieniem przy tłumaczeniu większości dokumentów. W tej kwestii przysięgli tłumacze działają zgodnie z postanowieniami art. 14, ust. 2 Ustawy o zawodzie tłumacza przysięgłego, które nakładają obowiązek transliteracji lub transkrypcji imion i nazwisk z języków zapisanych w alfabecie innym niż łaciński, zgodnie z ich zapisem w dokumentach uprawniających do przekroczenia granicy lub ich kopii.
W przypadku braku takich dokumentów, przysięgły tłumacz przekłada imiona i nazwiska zgodnie z zasadami pisowni obowiązującymi w kraju, gdzie wydany jest dokument wymagający tłumaczenia.
Zgodnie z tą zasadą, tłumacz powiela imiona i nazwiska z zagranicznego paszportu obywatela Ukrainy w poświadczonym tłumaczeniu.
W przypadku braku zagranicznego paszportu lub gdy klient nie życzy sobie okazania go (w takim wypadku tłumacz nie bierze zazwyczaj odpowiedzialności za ewentualne niezgodności w dokumentacji), tłumacz dokonuje transliteracji zgodnie z Rozporządzeniem Gabinetu Ministrów Ukrainy z dnia 27 stycznia 2010 r. nr 55 „Regulującym zasady transliteracji alfabetu ukraińskiego na alfabet łaciński”.

Powyższe zasady są stosowane również do zapisu nazw własnych jak np.: Derzhznak, Pryvatbank, Ukrposhta czy Kyivstar.
Tłumaczenie imion odojcowskich
Zaleca się zapisywanie imion odojcowskich w formie niezmiennej (Kodeks zawodowy tłumacza przysięgłego § 49. Zapis imion i nazwisk ust.1). Czyli np. „Андріївна” zapisujemy jako Andriivna.
Ze względu na to, że w Polsce spotykane jest użycie drugiego imienia, w celu dokładnego wskazania różnicy, osobiście stosuję zapis poszerzony o komentarz tłumacza w postaci: Andriivna [córka Andriia] lub Andriivna [imię ojca: Andrii].
